Princess Tutu AMVs for Fanvid Analysis
I’m pretty excited about one of my assignments that is coming up quickly. For my Fan Fiction class (yes, a legitimate English Studies course at my university), I have to write a five minute analysis of any fanvid I want from youtube. Since I love shoujo anime, I decided that I would choose that! So far, it’s been mostly television and movie fandoms that have been presented. Last class, a girl showed a Paradise Kiss music video though, so I’m not alone with the shoujo anime love. I had kind of expected that any anime shown in class would be some easily-accessible shounen series – *coughNarutocough*.
I’m presenting my analysis on Monday, so I’m pretty nervous! I’m not good at speaking in front of a crowd, but luckily we’re allowed to read from our papers. I’m choosing Princess Tutu as my fandom because I already had a few of my favourites in mind to choose from. I took this excuse to watch many Princess Tutu videos today. Who wouldn’t? ^_~
I do love Princess Tutu, but that’s not the only reason why I’m choosing it for my presentation. I think it’s really interesting that the plot of Princess Tutu actually has a bit of a fan fiction element to it; each episode is dedicated to a different fairy tale or folk story, and derivitive works are very similar in concept to fan fiction, except that there is money making involved in derivitive works while in fan fiction there is not.
Drosselmeyer, as a character, writes the canon story that Mytho, Kraele, Fakir, and Ahiru are expected to follow, but they all end up going against his grand plan. They are a bit like fan fiction writers themselves; they try to embrace the canon, but they end up deviating from it entirely.
Maybe I’m over thinking it. Or maybe I want to think about this some more!
I’m narrowing down my choices for my chosen anime music video. (I can’t get used to calling them fanvids! I just can’t!) I was originally thinking about choosing a video that I had created for the assignment, but I thought it might be strange writing about my own work. Youtube links to my top picks are after the jump!
Oh, Princess Tutu, how can you be so amazing?

Excellent choice in going with Princess Tutu! The second video wouldn’t play, but between the first and third, I’d go with the third one. Visually it’s more stimulating and seems to be better coordinated to the music. The first one isn’t as engaging so you might lose people as their minds wander. At least that’s how it would be if there were twenty clones of me in your classroom.

#1. It’s an okay AMV. The lack of a high-quality download version is disappointing; not as good for presenting it in front of the class.
#2. Video doesn’t work.
#3. ‘Hold Me Now’ is love! That being said, it’s extremely popular (it has it’s own 4chan meme!), so you might want to showcase something less well known.
If you don’t consider me horribly rude, would you consider using a Princess Tutu AMV I made? It’s here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKYx9fypIvI

Arr, the third amv actually won quite a few prizes and accolades. The song for the third one is by a swedish singer who always participates in the Eurovision contest. This song, if i remember right, won the second place =3

Of the two I could see (1 and 3) there really isn’t a choice. ‘Hold me now’ is generally regarded as one of the greatest AMVs ever made.

Sadly the second one has embedding disabled so that’s why it didn’t work. The youtube link for that one is here:

I think I’m going to go with the third one because I think it will be exciting for many viewers even if they have no inclination towards anime, especially of the shoujo variety. And I really adore the song. The video is so perfect!

[...] mentioned the other day about the anime music video analysis that I did for my fan fiction class. I did end up choosing Hold Me Now as suggested in the comments. Thanks for the input! Princess Tutu looked great on the big screen [...]
